چکیده

This paper discusses two theoretically challenging phenomena concerning the phi-features on plural pronouns: (i) ‘dependent plural pronouns’, i.e. plural pronouns that denote atomic individuals, and (ii) partial binding, i.e. plural pronouns with more than one antecedent. I will offer a novel semantic account of these two phenomena where all occurrences of phi-features are both semantically and morphologically relevant. For such an analysis, dependent plural pronouns constitute the main problem. In order to explain the effects of phi-features on dependent plural pronouns, I will pursue the following idea: the phi-features on a dependent plural pronoun reflect the range of values the pronoun takes, rather than the particular value it denotes at a time. In order to implement this idea in a compositional semantics, I will make use of (Skolemized) choice functions. The proposed account is motivated by a novel observation regarding phi-features on dependent plural pronouns that do not have c-commanding antecedents. I will also demonstrate that it can be straightforwardly augmented with set indices to account for partial binding.

Dependent plural pronouns with Skolemized choice functions

The present paper discusses two interesting phenomena concerning phifeatures on plural pronouns: (i) plural pronouns that denote atomic individuals (‘dependent plural pronouns’), and (ii) plural pronouns with more than one binder (‘partial binding’). A novel account of these two phenomena is proposed, according towhich all occurrences of phi-features are both semantically and morphologically re...

Mismatching the first person in Romance

This paper looks at mismatching phenomena in Romance languages that appear between verbs and pronouns (or similarly used nouns) when expressing the first person (plural and singular). It is well known that, relative to other pronouns, first person pronouns are more easily subject to meaning shift as well as to replacement by other expressions. This can be attributed to the pivotal function of f...

Plural Discourse Reference

The goal of this additional section is to further explore the semantic notion of plurality and argue that, in addition to plural reference to collections, natural language interpretation involves a notion of plural discourse reference that is essential for the interpretation of quantificationally dependent pronouns (and anaphoric expressions in general, e.g., definites, partitives, reciprocals ...

Motivating the (non-random) distribution of plural feminine pronouns in Hebrew The role of Humanness

While normative Hebrew distinguishes between atem/hem ‘you/they-msc-plural’ and aten/hen ‘you/they-fem-plural’, many current speakers use the masculine forms for both feminine and masculine plural referents, and it has been claimed that the masculine/feminine distinction has disappeared from the spoken language (Borochovsky Bar-Aba 2002). However, corpus examination shows many cases where the s...

Comprehending Conceptual Anaphors.

English pronouns must agree with their antecedents in number. But in some situations, pronouns violate this constraint, as in "I think I'll order a frozen margarita. I just love them." Three situations are identified in which such violations occur: (1) Plural (and technically illegal) pronouns are used to refer to frequently or multiply occurring items or events (as opposed to a unique item/eve...
